Mildew and mold – you know what it looks like.

You know what to do when you find it too – usually, bleach, bathroom cleaners, scrubbing, and a lot of patience.

You wouldn’t knowingly breathe in mold and mildew.

Yet, you might be.

How?

When you pack away and store your window or portable ac unit, make sure you store it in a place that is low humidity. Also, make absolutely sure you pack it away in the packaging or in a box that is sealed. Never let an AC unit sit there in someplace like a garage or humid basement without “protection”. As months go by, mold and mildew might develop inside the unit – namely, near the filter and internal ducts (the ones that blow cold air into your room.) The most common places are actually on the styrofoam boards and make up pieces of the inside of the unit. For the most part, the metal and mechanical parts will be fine. Mold may develop on plastic if the temperature is right.

If there is mold in the unit, and you can get the affected parts out for cleaning, please do so before running the unit. Make sure everything is completely clean before running it. The last thing you want is to breathe in mold!
